Report on Research Methodology Workshop

M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Nursing Education and Research are the pioneers and leaders in the field of nursing education in Karnataka. From the inception in 1987, huge numbers of nursing students are trained; they are well placed around the world. Current trend in health care industry demands the nurses to be well versed with the knowledge of research and evidence Based Nursing Practice.

Research is part of health care delivery system; hence nursing students need to be trained in research methodology. More than 25 years of experience in the field of nursing education and research has helped us to devise a research methodology workshop that was conducted on 8th& 9th April 2013 at Seminar Hall, MSRINER. There were around 42 participants from various colleges (Harsha College of Nursing, Shyamala Reddy College of nursing, Sri Kalabyravshwara Swamy College of Nursing and MSRINER). The participants were enthusiastic and participated well throughout the sessions.

Day one, according to the agenda was for registration, followed by Pre-test.Mrs Sujatha Murthy, associate professor delivered the key note address. The sessions commenced with a lecture on Problem statement delivered by Prof. Jadhav Sonali Tarachand, Principal, MSRINER, Mr Dharshan S, Lecturer, spoke    on Review of Literature and Prof Santham Lillypet held a session on Research design. That concluded the agenda of day one.

Day two was scheduled for an important topic of Sampling & Data collection, by Mr R K Muniswamy, Associate Professor, subsequently                Mr G Balamurugan, Lecturer highlighted the need of data analysis, and          Mrs Divyaraghavan spoke about Communicating research findings. As an evaluation process a post-test was conducted for the participants.

Another salient feature of this workshop was hands on training on SPSS by Dr NS Murthy, Director, DRP, GEF & his team comprising of Dr Shalini CN, Professor, Dept. of Community Medicine, Mr Shiva raj, Assistant Prof, Dept. of Community Medicine and Mrs Radhika, Lecturer cum Statistician, Dept. of Community Medicine, MSRMC. All the participants were evaluated at the end of the workshop. The workshop concluded with distribution of certificates to the resource person and the delegates.

 Table 1 shows that the knowledge score in post-test (10.31+2.276) is significantly higher than the pre-test (9.08+1.521) at p < 0.009.

 Table 2 shows that team has excelled in meeting the above criteria with mean of more than 4 in all area.

 Conclusion: Table – 3 shows that majority of the participants need this workshop for more than two days and they were suggested to include qualitative data analysis.
